Editorial Review: Amazon.com: This animated time-travel adventure features a stellar cast and is a delight for kids and adults alike. When Matt, a black teenager, has to go on a class field trip to the museum of Martin Luther King Jr., he thinks that he'd rather play baseball. But the trip turns into an exciting adventure when he and his best friend, Randy, who's white, are sent back in time to meet Dr. King. The story is also remarkably moving, as Matt and Randy learn what Dr. King did for humanity, and come to see him as a real person, not a historical figure. Matt and Randy experience segregation firsthand when they aren't allowed to eat on a train together. Together, they witness the bus boycott, the Birmingham riots, and the "I Have a Dream" speech. They discuss the theme of "non-violent resistance" with their new friend Martin and the work of Ghandi in India. As King tells Matt, "We must meet hate with love. It will take time, but somebody's got to start." Authentic historical footage blended with animation make this an excellent choice for teaching kids about the legacy of Dr. King. --Elisabeth Keating Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Great for classroomI originally purchased this for a friend who is also a teacher, however after seeing it, I decided I wanted one for my classroom as well! It is a great mix of animation and actual footage. My friend teaches in the primary grades and we both felt additional instruction and explanation might be necessary for that audience. I teach upper elementary and the DVD will support a basal reader selection quite nicely and without additional instruction. Highly recommend. Rating: - Fun & EducationalI have been showing this film in my middle school classroom for years (on VHS) and needed an update. It is warm, sometimes funny, and brings MLK to life as the boy who grows up to be one of life's great heroes. The characters'"voices" are familiar and every year the kids ask to see it again. I highly recommend this one. Rating: - love itjust had to have it ,i seen this movie in my son school about 5 years ago and fell in love with it. Rating: - Great DVD!This is one of the best DVD's ever for children! It gives a clear idea of what it was like to be a minority in the 1960's and how MLK helped lead the civil rights movement. I show it every year to my fifth grade students. Our Friend, Martin Rating: - teacherI showed this film to a mixed level high school group. Through out the film, the students were making comments "about how could this happen? Did you really see this?" etc. It is interesting to see that where as I lived a lot of this, these students only heard about it.The fact that it was low key and annimated let these students feel comfortable with their discussions. Unfortunately, they don't have an complete understanding of how much Mr. King did for us. The film is a good tool for discussion. Browse for similar items by category:
