The plastic began to rip/tear the first week; however, I am removing the plastic as they rip. The tambourines are still a nice addition to our music section without the plastic. The children simply love to play them, and they are used all day long every day. The plastic is not necessary. I was pleased by the overall sturdiness of these tambourines, and they have a decent sound (not great.) My son enjoys banging them.
