These replaced another company's set that cost more, wore out soon and were hard to keep batteries in place inside column. These have a battery retainer. Rating: - Defective productThe grinding mechanism failed to grind pepper after the first few days. It merely hung up, and I had to disassemble the grinder to free it. I tried several times, and each time it hung up. Also the light in the salt grinder failed about the same time as the pepper grinder failed. It does, however, continue, to grind salt; well maybe not now; my wife has threatened to throw them into the trash, and she may well have by now! Rating:  - Confusing dual descriptions, but...The description I read when I bought these last month said: 2 AA batteries needed. Now, I see there is another description above the first one saying: 4 AA batteries needed. I bought these based on the 2-battery theory...that was a major buying point for me...I was quite surprised and disappointed when I ended up with 4 battery grinders.
