Rating: - fix your kindle cover for almost nothingI received my Kindle for Christmas. This thing just amazes me. At first, I doubted that it would impress me. Wow, was I wrong. This thing is simply amazing. I've read a lot of complaints about the buttons being too easy to push when holding it. The Kindle was designed to stay in its cover. Only problem with that is that the stock cover does not securely hold the Kindle in place. I figured out a cheap (almost free) and easy way to cure that. I simply placed a 1-inch strip of sticky-back velcro on the back of the Kindle and inside the stock cover and presto, it stays put. Sure, I would love to have one of those fancy after market covers, but being the cheapo that I am, the velcro fix works great. Give it a try. I hope you enjoy your Kindle as much as I have. Really, this thing is right up there on the list of cool techno gadgets. I love it. Rating: - How did I ever get by without this?My first thought when ordering my Kindle was, "It's expensive, but it'll pay for itself in savings on the books." The books are always less expensive than a hard copy would be. I've only paid over ten dollars once, and that was for a systematic theology. I still got it for about half what retail would have cost. However, the savings on books will never pay for this device, because I buy so many more books than I would have otherwise. Instead of going to the bookstore, or even to my computer, now the bookstore is in my hands - I can literally shop from anywhere, and I do, often. Frankly, this is about the only downside I've discovered. I'm always reading three or four books at a time. Taking a trip used to require taking along a stack of books. Now I just carry the Kindle. After I'd had it about a month, and was thoroughly addicted, one day it just broke. The screen had black streaks across it, and did not clear when turning off the power. I thought "Oh no! How will I survive without it. I'll have to send it back, and then they'll send me a replacement. I may be Kindleless for a week or two." I called customer service, and they said they'd overnight a replacement. I had it the next day. I cannot speak too highly of Kindle customer service. Now, as far as going broke spending all my money on books, I've discovered a couple of huge positives: First, older books are fairly inexpensive. I bought some John Steinbeck for a buck or two. And even older, public domain books can be found for free. The Kindle will handle .txt files, so I'm acquainting myself with the classics from the 19th and early 20th century - for free. By the way, when you buy your Kindle, one of your first book purchases should be "The Kindle Cookbook." It tells you how to do things the owner's manual doesn't tell you. Rating: - Good, but overratedBetter than the Sony eBook by far. But, a bit overrated for the price. I bought mine refurbished, which is just as good. The next button is a bit annoying as it does get pressed accidentally and you would have to page back where you left off. Features is very good, but could use more administrative tools, such as the ability to remove all bookmarks as oppose to deleting each one. The web is similar to the 1st generation cell phones, which most are HTML based now. Should've been HTML based since the technology was there. But, the cost would've probably costed over $1,000. The online service, which is free by the way is good for something quick to search, such as books. Don't be surprised when Amazon starts charging to use the wireless feature in the future. Overall, good unit, better then the Sony eBook, clear view. But, a bit over-priced still. Would recommend. Rating: - Worth Waiting ForWhen the Kindle first came out, it was intriguing. I was looking for a solution to enjoy my passion for reading without accumulating a lot of books since we move around a lot for work. I had gone to the library, yet wanted to eliminate the extra trip. The Kindle was something I had to save for and it was worth the wait. I love how you can sample books before purchasing to get a sense of what the books is all about. After two years of waiting and trying alternative solutions, I finally have my Kindle, and I LOVE IT! Rating: - I truly enjoy my KindleI have had the Kindle for about 2 months now and think it certainly lives up to its hype. It is compact and easy to use! It works outside in the sunshine. The battery lasts alot longer than any other battery operated device that I own. I have some issues with the original delivery but in the end the manager I finally spoke to was very helpful and I am glad I stuck it out! |
