Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Not a fan but excellent movie
I am not a Michael Moore fan in particular but this movie was excellent. It touched on some important topics and no matter if you agree or disagree with his ideas it will leave you thinking and reflecting on the health care issues in the United States at the very least.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - So Sick, it's scary....
Until I saw his documentaries, I didn't like Michael Moore. I saw his Oscar acceptance speech and thought he was just another loud-mouthed, Anti-American jerk. However, after I saw Sicko, I found that what originally put me off about Michael is what I actually admire about him. I envy his intelligence and his bravery. I thought he just liked muckraking and getting in people's faces, but he does this because no one will answer his questions. We have to ask ourselves: why won't they? Why do they run from him or throw him out of their offices? His objective is to get answers from the people who are supposed to have them. The more people shut doors in his face or refuse to be interviewed makes him all the more determined. With Sicko, I appreciate the humorous anecdotes about our absolutely depressing (and scary) health-care industry, but he doesn't do that just to make it a comedy-but to underscore that our health care industry is just that-a big fat joke. Some of the people he interviews have such horrible experiences that I really thank God I rarely have to go to the doctor. I don't hate going to the doctor because I'm scared, but because I'll have to deal with the ensuing insurance paperwork nightmare. Michael proves that just by asking questions and raising awareness he is able to evoke change-just as he did in his documentary 'Bowling for Columbine' which I also recommend. Michael doesn't attempt to solve this problem for us but he does stoke a much needed fire. I didn't grow up in the fifties or sixties but from what I've seen, it was a time for activism and change. Today, there is nothing but complacency and the feeling that people no longer have the power. As Michael demonstrates, the government should always fear their people but in our country, it is the other way around. In Sicko, is it so disheartening to hear about so many lives that could have been saved if not for the disgusting absurdity of insurance company "policies." There are interviews from insurance company employees who admit there are people who's job it is find loop-holes in a patient's policy or health history just so they may deny a patient coverage or operation. It also includes an examination of absolutely superior health care in other countries-even poor countries! This begs the question: what is stopping us from having that? I really hate to say it but I wish I were living in another country-not because I hate America, but if I've got to be sick, I rather not be here.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - 1 of many layers of problems we must face as a society
I recommend everyone who is interested in this subject and wants more information outside of Moore's style watch "Critical Condition" it is more in the style of a documentary and further stresses the problem of health care and humanitarian issues we need to address.
By way of contrast, I also highly recommend "The Future of Food" which has stark relations to the health of our society as a whole as well as raises issues about the toxins and chemicals we are consuming directly and indirectly. "King Corn" is also worth checking out to get a sense of how so many of these issues are interconnected and seem to link back to the benefit of big business profits at the expense of the individual. Then there is the whole pharmaceutical industry that plays in as well -- on and on it goes......

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - "Monetary Society's" [are] the disease found in Health Care
"Made me "SICKO"!!!

This DVD was first unfathomable and then a rude awakening to Health Care!

The things we have done and still do for the almighty dollar, status and or whatever factions we deem better than another!!

I was sickened by the lack of empathy for human life, even worse than that - watching our politicians/prominent figures (at that time) derail "Hillary Clinton" who tried her hardest to form a Governmental Health Care Plan. * Many of whom stuffed large amounts of "Insurance Company" monies in their pockets!!

[One example: A man with no insurance cuts off 2 of his fingers; he actually had to decide which one he wanted to save as they wouldn't allow him to owe them the cost to perform the whole procedure; the many other tragedies are staggering]

...We my friends are a cruel lot!!!

This [our] "Monetary Society" is a disease... We and the like are in fact the "Infidel's" of this planet!! "Collateral Damage" is built into the system and not one iota of guilt seems to be apparent!! I am ashamed that I too have conspired to be a part of this monetary tragedy!!

Next?

We go to Canada, Britain and France all whom have Government Health Plans for all their citizens and come to learn through Moore's investigation how well the masses are cared for... Is it a perfect system? ...Is anything?

Lets see... paid government workers coming to parents in need, when giving birth the woman can get up to a year off with full pay from her job and the government, a young man born in France - moves to America - gets cancer while here - can't afford insurance - moves back to France - once back gets all his expences paid for... not too mention, is cured!! All the while getting paid to recover. The list goes on... WOW!!!

Moore gets a "KUDOS" but really he didn't even have to do any work as information literally fell right into his lap; all he had to do was gather the data!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Don't Get Sick
Perfect documentary. I loved it. Moore is courageous and brilliant. Two problems, though, that will keep socialized medicine from happening for a long time, if ever in the USA. Both are rooted in fear and a "cut and dry" way of thinking.

First, Post-Cold War residual. As Americans, Socialism = Communism = no freedom = death. That's just how we think.

Second, Money. Income taxes is a sore spot because, compared to other industrialized nations, we're accustomed to paying relatively low taxes, and we hate doing even that. Just breathing the words Raising Taxes will cause such an alarm in the minds of most Americans that it will supersede any chance for a good counter-argument to be considered.

Socializing medicine will be a touchy game for our government to play. For the moment, big pharmaceutical and insurance companies can relax and enjoy advantages the aforementioned reasons provide.
