Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Epson V500 Review
I just received the V500 and followed the simple instructions to get it hooked up with the appropriate software. I started scanning old photos and got spectacular results. I used the Professional Mode. The photos were all 30 years old and many of the nature shots had deteriorated to photos with a terrible red cast to them. I assumed they were useless. The V500 software turned these old faded and red photos into beautiful pictures again. I was amazed. I used scratch/dust removing, unmasking, and color restoration processes. I scanned the photos at 400 dpi. Occasionally, on photos with people in them I adjusted the colors a little more (which is easy to do). I tested 200, 400, 600, and 1200 dpi and found that anything over 400 dpi on the photos was superfluous. With the above processes running and at 400 dpi the 3x5 and 4x6 photos were taking 15 to 20 seconds to scan. I did over 300 photos at one sitting. The results, again, were astounding.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Scanner
Got this scanner for Christmas. Within 2 days I have scanned over 250 pictures. 1) Very easy to install (even for a non techy)- down load software, plug into itself, plug into the computer, and plug into the power. 2) quick to scan - less than one minute total time 3) Can correct the picture (old pictures that are yellow are like new again, pictures that have weird lighting is no problem) 4) scanned pictures are crisp and clear. So far I love it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Lana
I was able to print out pictures from my dad's old slides which were of the medium format. It took me a little bit to figure how to exactly place them but once I mastered that it was easy to scan. The pictures turned out beautifully. I checked on the internet to have these slides turned into pictures but they wanted $1.50 a picture. Since I have about 800 slides to scan I can now do it myself. Anyone who buys this scanner I think they will be pleased with the results.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - watch out.
I received this scanner as a gift. I am very disappointed and would advise potential purchasers to try something else. First of all, the bundled version of Photoshop Elements will not install, period. I called Adobe, who tells me that the enclosed version (3.0) is unsupported (they are on version 7.x) and I can buy a new version. So the Photoshop bundle is worse than worthless, since I wasted an hour getting this far.

Second, the scanner is very slow, even on normal resolution (300dpi).

Third, the online manual is terrible.

The scanned image quality is pretty good, and the driver install went seamlessly for me (Mac OS X 10.5),
but I am afraid that my expectations for a dedicated photo scanner at this price point are much higher than
what I am getting. The alternative is a Canon 8800F. I haven't tried it, so I suppose it could be as bad,
but I am sure it couldn't be any worse unless it was DOA.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Very impressive scanner
I've read several reviews that indicated users having problems during initial installation but I encounter none. The computer I hooked the V500 scanner up to is a Dell XPS410 running Vista Home Premium. I installed the software and then followed the hardware instructions on the instruction sheet. Installation could not have been more seamless and trouble free. The scanner installed as easily as any ancillary hardware item I've ever attempt to install - in fact it literally could not have been easier with the most difficult part being removing the blue shipping tape. I tested the scanner using a variety of settings as discussed in the help guide and the user's guide and I could not be more pleased with the scanner. I also tested the Twain driver using Photoshop Elements 5.0, GIMP 2.6, and PISCA 3.1 and in every case it worked flawlessly. I am also very pleased with the copy function which allows documents (or photos, etc) to be scanned and immediately printed without having to be imported into a software application for subsequent printing. The one aspect I can't report on yet is longevity but hopefully it will be long lasting. For the money you get a lot of bang for your buck.
