Nightmare #2 is that it is a consistently loosing girl's team. Girl's basketball isn't taken seriously till Driscoll decides to give it a try. You know he'll make a difference. You will fall into being a fan of the small Oklahoma town team. You will cheer the team and boo the villain heading the school board. It is a story well written and acted, so well, in fact, that it seems a true story. Perhaps that's because it is based on the real story of Jim Keith and the Lady Cyclones (Oklahoma famous.) And the older, real, original team and coach, gets to play as extras in the movie. The coach is a true-to-life basketball hero. Nobody can write realistic stories like true life. This coach's life and his teams will take you on an emotional spiral--UPWARD. "Believe In Me" Coach Driscoll and his wife have no children even though they want one so adoption is considered. The story sounds a bit like a girl's basketball answer to the boy's football story of "Facing the Giants." Both are great and recommended. Being a Hoosier, and growing up in what the Indiana state calls "Hoosier Hysteria," I find this a story very rewarding. Bonuses: Violence equals only a donnybrook on the court. The nudes in the shower scene show nothing. Druggies are nonexistent. Bottom line--it's a family film--and the girl's acting can play a pretty mean game of basketball, more like the girls of the 21st century. One goofy highlight to watch for: see girl's basketball being played by one team in dresses. Now that's shocking! You'll have to remote in reverse and see it again, not believing your eyes. Funny! A good movie to play the week before the basketball season begins--year after year after year. Rating:  - GOOD SPORTS MOVIEI AM A RETIRED HIGH SCHOOL WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH (20 YEARS) AND REALLY ENJOYED THIS MOVIE- IT WAS REALISTIC! Rating: - The Rocky of Girls BasketballNetflix recommended "Believe in Me" to me because it could tell I was obviously into true-life sports dramas. This movie fulfills its ambition to be the "Rocky" of high school girls' basketball. The scene is set in 1960s rural Oklahoma (very similar to the scene in Glory Road - the Rocky of men's college basketball). The coach is disappointed to be "demoted" to coach the girls' team, but he tries to make the best of it. After much practice and work, the team comes together and succeeds. It is a touching story. However, the movie is lacking in several ways: 1. Girls' basketball is not fun to watch. I think the camera work reflected this as most of the shots were close-in shots that did not focus on the whole floor. I'm not sure who is watching the WNBA, but maybe they would appreciate this movie more. 2. Acting was subpar. Obviously, this was a low budget film. I don't think it hit the big screen. But I can't think of one memorable performance. They were all over-the-top or underplayed. 3. The movie is very predictable. I'm not sure how much they deviated from actual events, but you could see all plot developments from a mile away. Usually Rocky movies follow a script, but a little deviation and a couple of surprises are welcome. Overall, it is a decent movie, especially if you have a girl that you want to get into high school basketball. But I wouldn't go out of your way to seek it out. Rating: - Great girls' sports movie!I just found this movie by accident in the movie rental store and was most pleased with it. It is based on a true story, and true stories always make for good movies. It is about this basketball coach who thinks he's getting hired to train boys and instead gets the women's team. Being a former military man that is rather insulting. But with the excellent advice of his insightful wife, he turns the team around and becomes a hero to the young ladies on his team. The actor portraying the coach is likeable and the movie was well done. I recommend it highly! Rating: - Wonderful movieThis movie was based about 50 miles from where I live. The movie lists another town name but is a wonderful story about the disappointments life gives many of us and the way a coach and girls basketball team overcame them and suceeded. My husband even said to choose all movies this good. |
